The History of the Grill

In 1940 Hansel Hurst opened the first Snow White Grill in Fredrick, Maryland.  Hansel thought "Snow White" was a cute name and would attract attention.  Coupled with his favorite colors of blue and white, he created his unique business, based on delectable little hamburgers served on mouth-watering dinner rolls.

The Hurst and Hall families owned and operated 6 Snow White Grills throughout the years located in Winchester, VA, Martinsburg, WV, and in Frederick and Hagerstown, MD.  In 1957 the Cates brothers were given permission to open 3 other Snow White Grills in Baltimore, MD.

The Loudoun Street location, opened in 1949, is the last of the Snow White Grills.  In 1986 the grill was purchased by David B. Grim who owned it until 2006 when the grill was sold to Robert White.  In February of 2008, Rick and Jan Childs became the new owners of the grill.  The famous mini-burger with its fresh ground beef, sliced grilled onions, pickle and steamed rolls are still cooked just the way Hansel Hurst would have wanted.

The Menu and the choices have expanded to include Pork BBQ Subs, fried hot dogs, sides, a "really good milkshake", and more!

Come on in and sit a spell.  Listen to the old stories and memories and even sit on the very same stool where Patsy Cline sat many an early morning with her band.
